Five questions before you ask AI.

A few minutes spent clarifying the request can make the result easier to review and use.

  1. What am I trying to get done? Describe the outcome in one sentence.
  2. Who is this for? Name the audience and what they already know.
  3. What information matters? Provide relevant, appropriate context and source material.
  4. What should the output look like? Choose a format, level of detail, and constraints.
  5. What will I check? Decide which facts, assumptions, and decisions need human review.
PUT IT TO WORK

Take a prompt you use often. Answer these five questions underneath it. Rewrite the prompt with the missing detail, then compare the outputs using the same review criteria.
